The Blumey Awards is a regional High School Musical Theatre Awards program, and eight of our local Cabarrus County schools have nominated their upcoming musicals to be judged for the competition.
- Why is it important? Because in 2021, the Blumey Best Actor Award went to our very own CabCo student, Bryson Battle of Hickory Ridge High School in Harrisburg.
Man Can Bryson Sing!
You may remember hearing Bryson Battle sing in person if you attended the Cabarrus Arts Council’s Breakfast for the Arts last year. However, if you missed it, you can watch him perform “Heaven On Their Minds” from “Jesus Christ Superstar” on Facebook.
- After winning the Best Actor Blumey in Charlotte, Battle went on to take home the top male honor at the 12th Annual National High School Musical Theatre Awards®, also known as the Jimmy Awards, which included a $25,000 college scholarship.
“Bryson radiates when performing and brings a uniquely stunning voice along with an authenticity in his characterization that is absolutely captivating and a gift to audiences,” said Andie Maloney, Vice President of Blumenthal’s Education Department. “He is not only a brilliant actor but an exceptional person and we look forward to watching him flourish in the industry!” [See full article]
How the Blumey’s Work
Sponsored by Blumenthal Performing Arts, the program recognizes, rewards, and encourages talent and achievement in musical theater among high school students within the Charlotte region. Schools are invited to register their musical performance to then be judged for the different categories.
- A panel of three professionals view and evaluate a public performance of each participating school’s musical production in the school’s home venue. Judges then utilize a comprehensive rubric to score all qualifying categories.
When can you attend? Clearly, our high schools are putting on award-winning caliber performances, so why not plan a night out while supporting our local students? Two of the eight school performances are in February, with their links to tickets below. The rest of the schools did not have their ticket information available at the time this article was written, but follow their school websites or social media channels for information. Enjoy the show and tell them Cabarrus Weekly sent you!!
