In a world that moves at lightning speed, there’s something special about stepping into a store filled with nostalgia, a place that lets you revisit your fondest memories through puzzles and sweet treats.
James’ Sweet Spot, a family-owned candy and puzzle store in Kannapolis, is doing just that—inviting guests of all ages to experience the joy of simpler times. But behind the colorful candy jars and intricate puzzle displays is a touching story of family, legacy, and love.
James’ Sweet Spot is owned and operated by Dawn and Dustin Rector, a mother and son duo, along with help from Dawn’s daughters and Dustin’s sisters: Brittain, Sydney, Willow, and Haven.
- The idea for the store came from the family’s late father and husband, James, who dreamed of opening his own business for years. His vision? To create a unique store that combines two of the family’s favorite things—candy and puzzles.
Sadly, James passed away unexpectedly in 2019 before he could see his dream come to life. But his family wasn’t ready to let go of his hard work and dedication.
Nearly a year after James’ passing, the Rectors opened James’ Sweet Spot, a business that continues the family’s long-standing tradition in retail while bringing something fresh and fun to the community.
- It serves as a tribute to James’ passion for creating a welcoming space where families can enjoy themselves.
James’ Sweet Spot isn’t just a candy store—it’s an experience. Guests can find a variety of treats like Clark bars, Mallow Cups, Charleston Chews, Necco wafers, and Pop Rocks, with many other items available by the pound. Adding to the retro feel, the store also offers glass-bottle sodas, perfect for pairing with your favorite sweet treat.

But the fun doesn’t stop at candy. James’ Sweet Spot also features a wide array of puzzles, from classic jigsaw puzzles to unique brain teasers. As Dustin explains, “There aren’t many puzzle stores in the area, so we wanted to provide something different for people to enjoy.”
In addition to candy and puzzles, James’ Sweet Spot boasts a full-service soda counter where guests can enjoy handcrafted sodas, milkshakes, and floats. Milkshakes are especially popular, and the family plans to expand the menu with more signature drinks as they approach their one-year anniversary in the new location. The store also offers seasonal favorites like hot apple cider and hot chocolate, perfect for cooler months.
Located in downtown Kannapolis, James’ Sweet Spot has become part of the area’s exciting transformation. With the reopening of the GEM Theater and the addition of new businesses, the store has attracted more foot traffic and excitement. It offers locals and visitors a fun place to enjoy a sweet escape.
As the store gears up to celebrate its one-year anniversary on September 21, 2024, the Rectors have some exciting plans in store for their customers. The first 20 visitors will receive a grab bag filled with goodies, and new menu items will make their debut. The store is also looking forward to hosting more community events in the future, continuing to engage with the local crowd and bring people together.
For the Rector family, James’ Sweet Spot is not just a business—it’s a way to carry on James’ memory. Whether you’re indulging in nostalgic candy, working on a challenging puzzle, or sipping a handcrafted soda, the store offers a space where fun and memories come together.
