Midland Provisions is more than just a specialty market and bottle shop—it’s a family endeavor led by Megan and Leigh, sisters-in-law and wives of brothers Michael and Bryan Toney. With a focus on offering high-quality products from North Carolina and beyond, Midland Provisions aims to bring a variety of unique and flavorful goods to the area.

  • Their dedication to providing an exceptional shopping experience, paired with the history and transformation of the building, makes it a must-visit destination.

The idea for Midland Provisions took root when Robert Toney, owner of Toney’s Carpet next door, purchased the building in 2022. Originally unsure what to do with the space, Robert enlisted his sons and their wives to brainstorm.

After some reflection, the family decided to combine their love for cooking, fishing, and supporting local businesses into what would become Midland Provisions. Megan and Leigh now run the day-to-day operations, curating the market’s products and creating a welcoming environment for visitors.

A Building Rich in History

The building that now houses Midland Provisions has a rich history in Midland. In its early days, it operated as a service station, fueling local travelers with gasoline and essential goods. When Robert bought the property it was more than just a business decision—it was a chance to restore a cherished community space. Together with his sons and their wives, the Toneys set out to breathe new life into the space.

The renovation included major updates to flooring, plumbing, and electrical systems, along with fresh coats of paint to brighten the interior. One of the standout features of the renovation is the mural on the exterior wall. Painted by local artists, the WMS Brothers, the mural is a vibrant tribute to North Carolina, depicting scenes from the mountains to the coast. It’s a visual representation of Midland Provisions’ mission—to bring the best of North Carolina’s food, drink, and craftsmanship under one roof.

FUN FACT: You’ll find a Standard Motor Oil sign hanging on the wall that they discovered while tearing up the floors during renovations! It’s a little piece of history they’re excited to share with every visitor, offering a glimpse into the building’s past.

Local Products and Unique Offerings

Midland Provisions prides itself on offering a wide array of carefully selected products. Inside, customers will find everything from gourmet cheeses, jams, and jellies to unique sauces, and snacks. For seafood lovers, Midland Provisions offers fresh, never-frozen seafood sourced directly from commercial fishermen along the North Carolina coast every other Friday and Saturday.

For beverage enthusiasts, Midland Provisions boasts a selection of craft beers from North Carolina breweries and wines from the state’s vineyards, such as Mountain Brook Vineyards and Noni Bacca Winery in Wilmington. Megan and Leigh’s focus extends beyond alcohol; the market also stocks non-alcoholic options like kombuchas and craft sodas, making it an inclusive space for all.

Meals and More for Your Table

The market will offer take-and-bake meals sourced from North Carolina-based Beverly’s Gourmet Foods and Mrs. Pumpkins. Their selection includes a variety of vegetarian meals such as soups, casseroles, and quiches, alongside more traditional meal kits like chicken pot pie, baked spaghetti, chicken chili, and side dishes. Looking ahead, Midland Provisions hopes to create its own seafood-based meal kits and more.

But it’s not just food and drink that make Midland Provisions a standout. The shop also carries a variety of personal care products, including goat’s milk soaps, candles, lotions, and honey sourced from Honeysuckle Hill Bee Farm. These natural products are perfect for those looking to treat themselves or find a thoughtful gift.

Megan and Leigh are especially proud of the relationships they’ve built with North Carolina farmers and producers. Much of their inventory comes directly from small businesses and family-owned operations. While attending a ‘Got to Be NC’ festival in Raleigh, they learned about several local vendors like Jammin Jays Dip, A.L.L. Seasonings, Sweet Vine, and FranCee Farms, known for their goats’ milk products. These connections allow them to bring authentic, high-quality goods to their customers. The goal is simple: to offer something new and exciting with every visit.

A Space for Gathering and Relaxing

The shop is designed to be more than a place to purchase goods, it’s also a space for community gatherings and casual hangouts. Outside you’ll find a welcoming outdoor seating area where guests can enjoy snacks and beverages on-site. It’s dog-friendly too, complete with water bowls and leash hooks for four-legged companions.

Midland Provisions is hosting a Grand Opening on October 19, 2024, from 10am–7pm that promises to be a community celebration. The event will feature product samples, opportunities to meet local vendors in person and they will be raffling off a basket filled with their favorite goodies.

Midland Provisions is more than just a market; it’s a place that blends history, community, and a shared love for good food and drink. Megan and Leigh are excited to be part of the growth happening in Midland and hope to contribute to the area’s development by drawing more visitors and offering a unique shopping experience. They have created a place where people can find something new and support local businesses along the way.
