The “Collecting the Great War” exhibit features over 200 World War I items collected and donated by Dave Goff (pictured above) and supplemented by items from the ECHS permanent collection.
Editor’s Note: There is so much new happening in Cabarrus County, but we are also a community that treasures history. Dave Goff was a special friend of ours here at Cabarrus Weekly and we can’t wait to spend time with these items he collected over the course of his lifetime at this exhibit, and we encourage you to take a Saturday afternoon to do the same.

Contributor: Jamie Richardson
You are probably reading this article from 1 of 2 perspectives…. “OMG! I’m obsessed with Boba tea and can’t wait to try out BOTH B&K Tea Cafe locations” OR “What in the world is Boba tea????”
I must confess, I fell into the latter camp, which is why I was excited to sit down with co-owners Bobby Cain and Kristen Compton at their downtown Concord location, but not before I did some research, meaning I asked my 20-year-old daughter who has a mini Boba tea on her keychain. She explained the basics and I decided I needed to try it myself.
Boba tea is a tea-based...

National Bootlegger’s Day (January 17)
National Bootlegger’s Day is celebrated on January 17, every year, to mark several key events:
Start of prohibition in the U.S.
Distillation of Templeton Rye whiskey
Infamous gangster Al Capone’s birthday
What is most interesting is how all three events are interconnected. It was the onset of prohibition that prompted both Capone and farmers in Templeton, Iowa, to distill their own whiskey to sell. This was how the famous Templeton Rye whiskey was born, and its popularity spread like wildfire during prohibition… so much so that it became Al Capone’s favorite whiskey.
On January 17, 1920, the...
🥃 Tour the Only Whiskey Prison in the U.S.

Southern Grace Distilleries is America’s only distillery that’s housed in a former prison. The compound originally opened in 1929 as Mount Pleasant Prison, where it remained in operation until it was shut down in 2011.
In 2014, North Carolina natives Leanne Powell and Thomas Thacker moved into the facility and founded Southern Grace Distilleries. In 2019, Leanne passed away, but the small staff that runs this company works hard every day to keep Leanne’s vision alive.
