Rain and Lightning to Drench Tuscaloosa and Birmingham Tonight With Showers Spreading After 7 PM

TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA — Tens of thousands of concertgoers heading out tonight in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham are in for a wet evening, as widespread rain and frequent lightning are forecast to push through both cities after 7:00 PM, threatening outdoor events across central Alabama.

Showers Arrive Early, Heaviest Push Comes After 7 PM

In Tuscaloosa, isolated showers are possible as early as 5:00 PM ahead of the main rain band. The more widespread and steady rainfall is expected to arrive after 7:00 PM, coinciding with peak evening hours at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Temperatures will slide from the low 80s at 6:00 PM down into the upper 70s by 8:00 PM as the rain moves through.

In Birmingham, a similar timeline is in play. Isolated showers are expected early in the evening, with a few showers becoming more likely after 7:00 to 8:00 PM across the city, including near the Coca-Cola Amphitheater.

Lightning a Real Concern Across Both Cities Tonight

Forecast radar valid at 8:00 PM CT shows a well-organized line of moderate to heavy rainfall pushing through central Mississippi and into western Alabama, with the heaviest reflectivity values — reaching into the yellow and red range — concentrated near the Mississippi-Alabama border and tracking eastward.

Lightning flash density data confirms active electrical activity associated with this line, with the highest flash density values concentrated across a corridor cutting through central and northern Alabama. Lightning is very possible in both Tuscaloosa and Birmingham as storms move through during the evening hours.

Severe Thunderstorm Threat Remains Low

Despite the lightning and rain, no severe thunderstorm threat is expected for tonight’s events. The storm system is not producing the type of rotation or wind structure associated with severe weather. Rain gear and lightning awareness are the primary concerns for anyone outdoors tonight.
