Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida Gulf Coast Face Spin-Up Tornado Risk Today as Thunderstorm Line Moves Through

UNITED STATES — A tornado risk is in place today, Friday, May 1, 2026, across a corridor stretching from Texas through Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and into Florida’s Gulf Coast. Forecasters are watching for a couple of spin-up tornadoes embedded in a line of thunderstorms later today. The tornado probability outlook was updated at 2:40 AM ET on May 1, 2026.

Where the Tornado Risk Is Focused

The tornado probability map shows a 2 percent tornado risk zone covering two connected areas along and near the Gulf Coast:

Western Zone: Covering the area from San Antonio eastward through Houston and along the Texas Gulf Coast.

Eastern Zone: Stretching from the New Orleans area eastward through coastal Louisiana, southern Mississippi, Mobile, Alabama, and continuing along the Gulf Coast toward the Florida Panhandle and toward Tampa.

The threat zone is tightly focused along the immediate Gulf Coast corridor, with areas further inland such as Jackson, Mississippi sitting outside the outlined probability zone.

What Type of Tornado Threat This Is

This is not a large organized outbreak. The threat involves a couple of spin-up tornadoes that could become embedded within a line of thunderstorms moving through the region later today. Spin-up tornadoes within squall lines are often brief and can occur with little warning, making it important for residents along the Gulf Coast to remain weather aware throughout the afternoon and evening.

Residents across San Antonio, Houston, New Orleans, Mobile, and the Gulf Coast communities of Mississippi, Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle should monitor weather conditions closely today.
