Freeze Warnings, Freeze Watches and Frost Advisories Blanket the Midwest Saturday Morning With Lows Dropping to 28 Degrees
MIDWEST — Widespread frost advisories and freeze watches and warnings are in effect for Saturday morning, May 2, 2026 across a large portion of the Midwest, covering areas from Wisconsin and Illinois through Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and into West Virginia. Temperatures in the freeze watch zone could drop to 28 to 32 degrees, while frost advisory areas will see lows of 33 to 36 degrees.
Three Alert Levels in Place Saturday Morning
Freeze Warning — Wisconsin: The most serious alert covers portions of western and central Wisconsin, including areas near Wausau, Madison, and surrounding communities. A Freeze Warning indicates that damaging freeze conditions are expected and sensitive vegetation will be killed without protection.
Freeze Watch — Michigan and surrounding areas: A broad Freeze Watch covers much of Michigan including the Lower Peninsula, stretching through Saginaw and Detroit and extending southward toward Chicago, Toledo, and portions of Indiana. Temperatures of 28 to 32 degrees are possible across this zone.
Frost Advisory — Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois corridor: A Frost Advisory covers a wide area from northern Illinois and Indiana southward through Dayton, Columbus, and Cincinnati, with the advisory zone extending toward the Chicago metro corridor. Lows of 33 to 36 degrees are expected across this area.
Frost Advisory May Expand Further East
Forecasters are also monitoring the potential for the Frost Advisory to expand further east into southern Ohio, including areas near Pittsburgh, Columbus, and toward Charleston, West Virginia. That expansion zone is outlined on the alert map with a dashed boundary indicating it remains under evaluation.
What Residents Need to Do Tonight
With lows dropping to potentially 28 degrees in the most severely impacted zones, residents across the Midwest are urged to:
- Cover or bring in all sensitive plants tonight
- Protect any recently planted garden crops or seedlings
- Monitor any pets or livestock exposed to overnight temperatures
The combination of clear skies and the cold air mass in place will allow temperatures to drop quickly after sunset Friday and remain near or below freezing through Saturday morning.
