Kansas, Missouri and Illinois Face Slight Risk of Large Hail, Damaging Winds and Tornadoes Monday With Conditional Severe Threat Also Possible Across Central Oklahoma This Evening

KANSAS, MISSOURI AND ILLINOIS — The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Slight Risk of severe storms across parts of Kansas, Missouri and Illinois valid Monday, May 4, 2026 from 1:00 PM through Tuesday morning, with large hail as the primary driver and isolated damaging winds and a tornado or two also possible across the risk zone.

Slight Risk Zone Targets Kansas, Missouri and Illinois

The SPC Day 1 outlook issued at 12:52Z Monday, May 4 places the Slight Risk yellow zone centered across a corridor covering portions of Kansas, Missouri and Illinois. A broader Marginal Risk surrounds the core area extending coverage across the wider Midwest and Plains region.

Primary hazards inside the Slight Risk zone:

  • Hail — large hail is the main threat today
  • Wind — isolated damaging gusts possible
  • Tornado — a tornado or two cannot be ruled out

Central Oklahoma Faces a Separate Conditional Threat This Evening

A conditional isolated severe threat exists across Central Oklahoma this evening. If storms are able to develop in this area, isolated large to very large hail will be possible. A tornado also cannot be ruled out across Central Oklahoma if storm initiation occurs.

This threat remains conditional and dependent on whether storms can fire in the region this evening.
