Nebraska, Kansas and Iowa Face Severe Storms With Large Hail, Damaging Winds and Tornadoes Near Kearney, Grand Island, Sioux Falls and Wichita Saturday May 16 This Afternoon and Evening

KEARNEY, NEBRASKA — Severe storms are likely this afternoon and evening across parts of the central Plains, with the SPC key messages updated at 2:42 AM CDT on May 16, 2026 confirming large hail, damaging winds, and a couple of tornadoes all possible. A secondary threat of critical fire weather is also developing across the Southwest into the southern High Plains as dry and windy conditions combine with dry thunderstorms.

Where the Severe Storm Threat Is Focused Today

The categorical outlook shows three distinct risk levels across the central Plains:

Enhanced Risk core zone:

  • Centered over Kearney and Grand Island, Nebraska
  • Extends into northern Kansas near Salina and Hutchinson
  • This is where the highest intensity storms are most likely today

Slight Risk surrounding zone:

  • Covers Sioux Falls, Sioux City, Omaha, Lincoln, Topeka, Wichita, and Dodge City
  • Extends into Iowa toward Burlington and Davenport

Marginal Risk outer zone:

  • Reaches into South Dakota, Minnesota, Missouri, and Kansas City

  • Damaging winds — widespread across the Slight and Enhanced corridors
  • A couple of tornadoes — possible especially in the Enhanced core near Kearney and Grand Island

Critical Fire Weather Threat in the Southwest

Separately from the Plains severe weather, dry and windy conditions with lightning and dry thunderstorms are supporting hazardous fire weather activity across the Southwest into the southern High Plains. A critical fire weather zone is marked over portions of New Mexico on the national weather map valid through Sunday morning.
